50ft. STEAM PICKET BOAT

Scale: 12th scale
Hull: 50 inch
Beam: 10 inch
Draft:

Royal Navy Victorian Steam Picket Boat.

Our large 1inch to 1ft. model hull is of a typical Victorian steam picket boat and is the model for steam power with R/C. This type of launch was carried on large cruisers, battle cruisers and battleships of the late Victorian era, their used were numerouse, some were even trailered to Lake Victoria during WWI to defeat the German armoured paddler there, their mission was a great success.

The hull is the ideal size for a full steam plant, with an internal hieght of 5.3/4inch increasing to over 7 under the optional boiler housing. There is also an optional front gun base available as well. The highly detailled plans by DAVID MacGREGOR mean a very good scale model can be made, electric power can also be used easily. The hull can also be used for a Windermere type steam launch as well.

With her large scale she makes for a big and impressive looking model on the water, a hansom and attractive model that can be tackled by modeller of all experience, eminently ideal for the modeller who wishes to build their first steam powered model. A subject that looks really good on the water.

Afric star

Scale: 96th scale
Hull: 61 inch
Beam: 8.5 inch
Draft:

The Afric Star

Blue Star Line Passenger/Cargo ship.

This large and popular model is of one of the Blue Star line fleet, the hull features the "bulbous" bow as found on this and many other modern merchant ships. The bow shape along with the length and beam make this hull an excellent all weather performer on the water, owing to its large size, and the large superstructure (which can easily be made removable, giving excellent hull access) it has plenty of room for electric power or even a steam plant.

The hull features the main side loading doors, panama ports and top trim line, it is supplied complete with large and well detailed plan by Nexus, this makes it suitable for builders of all experience. When built it looks really impressive on the water.

Atlantic Conveyor

Scale: 144th scale
Hull: 58.1 inch
Beam: 7.3/8 inch
Draft:

The ATLANTIC CONVEYOR and her sister ship Atlantic Causeway were taken up from trade at an early stage of the Falklands War, they were to act as emergency aircraft transports and carriers when at the Falklands, whilst on convoy to the Islands they were attacked with Exocet missiles and the ATLANTIC CONVEYOR was sunk with a large loss of life. She thus became the first British merchant vessel to be lost to enemy action since WWII.

With the full assistance of the Cunard Steamship Co, we have produced a fully detailed scale hull of this fast container ship, the hull features distinctive bulbous bow, full waterline, side ACL logos, side loading doors, anchor recesses, panama ports and all other hull cut outs. The hull is ideal for R/C. and electric power and makes an impressive and stable on the water model capable of sailing in rough conditions.

The plans are truly superbly detailed, being drawn for us by MARBETH DESIGNS, at N gauge the use of model railway containers make an ideal deck cargo and Matchbox harrier kits will complete a Falklands version, This is a big, beautiful hull with masses of interesting detail, yet thanks to the highly detailed plans easy to build by beginner or expert alike.

Battelship IJNS YAMATO

Scale: 100th scale
Hull: 104.5/8 inch
Beam: 14.1/2 inch
Draft:

The biggest battleships ever built and to see service in WWII (the greatest displacement, biggest guns & heaviest armour) the YAMATO and her sister ships MUSASHI and SHINANO (completed as aircraft carrier) were laid down in 1937 and entered service in 1941. Yamato was sunk on the 7.4.45 by US carrier born aircraft. She was armed with 9 x 18.1 guns in three turrets, her displacement was 69,990 tons and she had a speed of 27 knots. We know our mould was taken off the original (seized) builders model (thus represents the only thing actually left off the full-size vessel) and shows a high degree of detail including all the plating, portholes, de-gaussing coil, prop shaft positions etc. We do not supply the hull with drawings, however we recommend the book Anatomy of the Ship - YAMATO by Janusz Skulski published by Conway Maritime Press Ltd as the ideal building companion. This hull is huge, she makes up into a truly magnificent model, on the water she must look incredible, displacement is in excess of 340lbs, but, if you like them big, this is the one for you!

Included is our unique CONSTRUCTION MANUAL, this informative illustrated guide gives step-by-step instructions on how to fit out a typical GRP hull and is full of a wealth of useful hints and tips, as well as a list of other suppliers and manufacturers.

CELIA JANE

Thames Sailing Barge.

Model Scale = ½" to 1ft. (1:24)

Length….. 50" (+Bowsprit) Beam…11 ½"

The Thames Sailing Barge CELIA JANE was first published as a large plans feature in the Model Boats magazine, she has now been developed into a comprehensive HULL, PLANS & MATERIALS pack.

The CELIA JANE was a large Coastal type barge originating from around the turn of the century, although not fitted with a bowsprit she most certainly was at one stage fitted with one, as a model she makes a really wonderful sight on the water, the prototype sailed well and was fun to use, with our package listed below she is not too difficult or time consuming to make and indeed could be tackled by the more ambitious beginner.

Our beautifully moulded one piece GRP hull is moulded to the top of the bulwark level and has the side rubbing strips, bow & stern posts all moulded in, very little work is required to get the hull ready for work.

There is a very comprehensive set of drawings to go with this pack, these make for easy and straightforward construction of the model.

This is a re-mastered drawing showing full-size side elevation, section along centreline of hull and, full-size drawings for Anchor windlass, Main mast box, Brail winch, Leeboards, Stayfall tackle, Rudder mechanism. Section through Wheelhouse and front view. Full-size drawing for Sprit and Topmast. (With all metalwork shown).

This re-mastered drawing shows fully detailed Full-size deck plan layout, model legend and notes..

This re-mastered drawing shows the side as rigged view (drawn half size) and view from forward on main mast. (drawn half size) Full-size drawings for Mainmast, Headstick, Mizzenmast, Mizzen boom, Mizzen gaff. (All masts/booms have all metalwork shown) Crosstree detail drawings, Ships boat and all blocks (drawn full-size.)..

This is a new Template drawing, it shows all deck beams (drawn full-size) full-size deck pieces, all hatch, wheelhouse, scuttle, hatch covers etc. As all are drawn full-size they can be transferred directly to the ply sheets for cutting out and glueing together, this drawing also shows the position of all deck beams..

This is a new Template drawing, it shows full-size all the sails, with all their details and stitching, it is fully annotated for use and should make the actual making of the sails fairly straightforward.

This manual has been written to specifically aid the building of the model, it goes through step by step the suggested construction sequence for making the model, it includes how to make and rig the model, making the sails (including shrinking, dying etc) what threads to use. How to paint the model and fit Radio Control if required, it includes a list of other suppliers for what fittings are available. And a list of model and full-size barge sailing associations.

The above package allows for a really detailed model to be made at 1:24 scale many commercial fittings are available, fitted with two channel RC her performance on the water is really excellent, she makes up into a beautiful model ideal for scale sailing regattas and model barge racing.

CHANT

Scale: 48th and 32nd scale
Hull: 37 and 55.5 inch

Draft:

CHANT.

WWII Standard Design Channel Tanker.

The CHANT channel tanker was designed during WWII to carry petrol and oil products for the Allied invasion of Europe in 1944, in all 43 were built, some inland in sections. Their straight line designs had no curved or twisted plates and with no sheer gave them a rather ugly appearance which resulted in them being nicknamed "Churchills Holy Answer to the Nazi Terror".

The very well detailed, full-size two sheet plans show a typical wartime CHANT with its armament. The model hull is equally suitable for the dry cargo version "Empire F" class (so called because all their names began "Empire F...") Differences between the two classes being shown on the plans.

A total of 25 vessels of the dry cargo version was built, after the war many were decommisioned and sold into civilian use, some are still believed to be trading in the Mediterranean.

NOTE! Our hull for this model is available in two sizes, 1:48 & 1:32, both make into a very attractive and different model, with the raised forepeak a good heavy weather boat, in fact the larger version will take a steam engine, a good scale model for the beginner or expert alike to tackle.

Clan Ross

MOTOR VESSEL CLAN ROSS.

Clan Line Passenger/Cargo Liner.

Our model of the CLAN ROSS is of a Clan Line passenger/cargo liner built be Greenock Shipbuilding Co, (later Scott Lithgow) at Port Glasgow in 1954. One of a large series of ships, CLAN ROSS traded under Clan Lines colours until 1965 when she was transferred to the Clan & Union Castle Line. She was eventually disposed of to Chinese interests in 1972. Very typical of many ships of her day CLAN ROSS was an attractive and well balanced vessel of the traditional three island design, with graceful lines, lots of cargo handling gear and large distinctively capped funnel. Two later ships Clan MacIndoe and Clan MacIlwrath had the whole superstructure moved right aft giving a totally different outline.

Our beautifully moulded large hull features portholes, hull trimline and waterline detail moulded in to assist builders. Supplied complete with very detailed plans drawn for us by MARBETH DESIGNS, this superb hull is ideal for R/C and can be powered with electric motor or a steam plant, with a hull of such high volume there is room for many extra features can be fitted such as electric lights, engine sound, horn, anchors etc.

CLAN ROSS is an excellent subject for the merchant ship lover, the basic hull is of course perfect for conversion to other Clan Line ships, or even liners and merchant vessels of other lines.

CLYDE PUFFER.

CLYDE PUFFER.

This is a large scale hull of a well known type of Scottish coastal craft, made even more famous by the books about Para Handy and of course the recent television series staring Gregor Fisher.

Our hull has plate lines, rubbing strakes and washport positions all moulded in, with a slightly battered air about the hull this makes for a really attractive finished item. The hull is very capacious making it more than suitable for steam power or large electric power capable of carrying large batteries for long duration runs.

No plan is provided with the model, however Nexus do several puffer plans that can easily be enlarged to suit the hull, at such a large scale the making of fittings is fairly easy and a highly detailed model can be made, as no two puffers were ever the same personal detailing can be used to great effect.

German Type VIIc (U 570)

Scale: 1 to 48
Hull: 64"
Beam: 5 5/8"
Draft: Height = 11".

German Type VIIc (U 570)

The German type VII U boat was a single hull ocean-going boat of medium displacement, she was fitted with external ballast tanks and main negative tank inside the pressure hull. With its various variants (VIIa, b, c, c-41, c-42 d & f) they formed the backbone of the German submarine fleet for over 10 years.

The design of the Type VII was developed from the UB III boats of WWI and the Finish Vetehinen class built between 1926 and 1932. The design sought to build a boat of high strength, good sea-keeping, surface and underwater handling, good surface speed and large torpedo capacity. Construction had to be straightforward and maintenance had to be fairly simple, all this resulted in a boat 218ft long displacing just under 915 tons.

The resulting submarine was one that was easy to mass produce, stable, well armed and popular with its crews. The prototype Type VII was built in 1935 at Deschimag AG Weser, Bremen, launched on 24/6/36 and numbered U27 (lost to Naval action in the North Sea in 1939). In the following 10 years 704 boats of this general design were built, thus making them the largest class of submarine ever built. Of the Type VIIc variant 661 boats were ordered (U69 on.).

Our model is off the ‘Type VIIc’, U-570 built by Krupp Germania, Kiel. Launched March 1941. Whilst on patrol off Iceland on the 25th. August 1941 she was attacked and disabled by aircraft of RAF Coastal command, the aircraft then watched her in succession until a Royal Navy ship arrived on the scene and took her over, this after her crew had unsuccessfully tried to scuttle her. Crucially her ‘enigma’ code making machine was captured, (the first of only a few) and this single act of possession of this machine probably saved millions of lives and shortened the duration of the war. After repairs she served in the Royal Navy under the name of HMS/M Graph. She was eventually lost on the 20/3/44 on the west coast of Islay.

The Type VII was also the class to sustained the most losses of WWII, of the 704 boats built, 437 were lost to Allied action a further 165 were scuttled by their crews to either avoid capture or at the end of the war.

Our model can be completed as either the Royal Navies HMS/M Graph any one of the German boats.

The Type VIIc U-570 is one of the models we have bought in from John Darnell of Darnell Models of Leavesdon.

This twin screw model was the original model in the Darnell range and was designed to submerge just using forward speed alone, however she can easily be made to submerge from stationary, using an air pump system.

When completed the mouldings make up into a handsome and attractive large model typical of the most active U Boat type of WWII.

German Type XXI U Boat "U-2511"

Legend has it that Type XXI boats were designed from a sketch by Admiral Doenitz himself, whatever the truth he approved their design in June 1943 and an initial order was placed for 200 boats. The were a double hulled boat of ocean-going type with high submerged speeds. Her high speed was achieved by plating over the pressure hulls with a thin streamlined casing. The two hulls sat over each other with plating connecting them, the upper hull contained the living quarters, engines etc, the much smaller lower hull contained batteries, provisions etc.

The boats were required to be built quickly so a very high degree of sub assembly of pre-fabricated parts and sections was designed into their construction, in fact the four main units would arrive at the slip to be completed very quickly. The conning tower was of an enclosed streamlined design to cut down underwater drag. This was also popular with watch keepers during cold winter nights in the North Atlantic.

The original order placed in late 1943 was for 200 units, this was later increased to over 1,200 units however only 118 boats were eventually built.

Range on the surface was 15,500 miles at 10 knots, she could maintain a submerged sprint speed of 17.5 knots for 1 hr. However running at 5 knots submerged she could stay down for 3 days or at 10 knots 11 hrs. Then using a snorkel she could clean air and recharge batteries in only a few hours. Great thought was given to accommodation and crew comfort, this was necessary as they were designed for a cruise lasting 150 days, mostly submerged. These boats were the first of a class that if introduced earlier could quite likely have changed the outcome of WWII.

GERMAN TYPE XXIII U BOAT

Scale: 1 to 32
Hull: 42.75 inch
Beam: 4.75 inch
Draft: HIGHT 11 inch

German Type XXIII U Boat

The type XXIII were designed and ordered in 1943 as small twin (superimposed) hull vessel for coastal waters operations. The larger diameter upper hull contained the crews quarters, engines and torpedo tubes. The smaller lower hull contained some of the fuel, stores and batteries, hull was of streamlined design and built in four large pre-fabricated sections, these were then transported to and assembled on the shipyard slip-ways.

These small craft had quite a handy performance, surfaced range at 6 knots was 4,400 nm, high submerged speed was 12.5 knots with a submerged endurance at 10 knots of over 4 hrs, likewise at 4 knots she could keep down for over 2 days. Maximum submerged depth was 500 ft and crash dive time was under 9 seconds, a at sea endurance of nearly 40 days.

Although over 200 were ordered, only 62 were commissioned into service, not many actually survived the war, most falling victim to bombing raids and being scuttled by their crews a end of hostilities, some were taken into service with allied nations after the war, two were salvaged in 1956 and saw service for some years in the navy of the FRG.

The ideal beginners model, this small single screw model was originally designed to operate on 2 channel radio control and dives by increasing the forward speed, however there is room inside to build in a static diving system if you take care how you do it. I have seen one of these boats used as a surface model at a scale model steering regatta. This model is absolutely ideal for the beginner to model submarines looking for a handy size model that is easily transportable and will fit into the smaller sized car.

HULL AND MATERIAL PACK                                                                                                 OOur moulding for HMS Kite is for a 19th. Century Victorian Navy flat iron gunboat. Commonly known as a Rendel Flat Iron. One of a class of 22 vessels of the Ant class designed by Devonport Dockyard and built by Napiers during 1870 187. she was commissioned in 1872 and sold out of service in 1920. This very unusual model has been built by one of the UKs top modellers Mr Paul Freshney of the Brentwood MBC. Paul is a regular contributor to Model Boats and this model has been covered by a large series of detailed construction articles starting in the March 2001 issue of the magazine. In 2000 the model was entered in the Naviga World Championships in Belgium here it was deservedly awarded a silver medal a true testament to Pauls modelling skills.

Our HULL & MATERIALS Pack consists of. One piece GRP Hull moulded to top of bulwarks it has the foredeck side rubbing strips all the plating and rivet detail moulded on very little work is required to get the hull ready for work our model has been taken off the Paul Freshney master hull plug we sincerely believe this to be one of the best scale model hulls ever to be offered to model boaters in the UK.

The materials pack contains enough high impact polystyrene sheets in 2mm, 1mm & 0.75mm thicknesses to make all the deck beams sub-decks boiler casing etc. plus 3mm x 6mm x 660mm strips to go around the inside of the hull to support the deck.

Also included is a copy off our unique fully illustrated Construction Manual full of useful hints & tips on how to make a model from one of our GRP hulls what glues to use where what paints to use also included is a very useful list of other suppliers a must for the beginner to model boating.

With a displacement of nearly 15lbs this makes up into a surprisingly functional and effective regatta model although a complex and detailed model when used in conjunction with our comprehensive part fittings kit and Paul Freshneys excellent series of construction articles from the Model Boats magazine she is a model that could be tackled by the more ambitious beginner.

When powered by a pair of 545 type motors the model is highly manoeuvrable when fitted with twin electronic speed controllers with her wide beam she is a suprisingly stable model and well suited to regatta work.

Included is our unique CONSTRUCTION MANUAL this informative illustrated guide gives step by step instructions on how to fit out a typical GRP hull and is full of a wealth of useful hints and tips as well as a list of other suppliers and manufacturers.

HMS BRECON.

1980s   HUNT class mine sweeper.

This model of the HUNT class mine counter measures vessel as in 1980 it comes lightly but accurately moulded, the detailed hull features the main belt moulded in and shows the location of the side strips to port with anchor recesses and sonar dome positions all marked. This full size class of ship was moulded in GRP by Vosper Thorneycroft.

This model is on the small side, and weight is critical to maintain the model on a correct and stable waterline it is easily possible to fit modern miniature R/C gear with twin motors and battery and still add lead ballast. We do though recommend this as the project for the more experienced builders Note that NO PLAN IS PROVIDED

H.M.S. DREADNOUGHT 1905

Scale: 1 to 100.
Hull: 56.5inch
Beam: 9.5 inch
Draft:

This is the original Big Gun battleship built in 1905 at the Royal Navy Dockyard at Portsmouth .(in great secrecy) She was the brainchild of Admiral Sir John Fisher. Most striking feature was her all 12" (10 No.) main gun armament, one of the biggest revolutionary steps was the fully Parsons turbine power to 4 shafts, this gave a top speed of 21 knots. When first shown she immediately made all other battleships in the world obsolete, (unfortunately this meant that all Royal Navy ships were also obsolete!) Although a battleship, the hull lines are really fine and accurate (made from a Brian King mould), making for an easily driven model, our hull has no plating detail, although it could be said that on a model at this scale plating would not be noticeable. Very good quality full-size plans from A & A show the ship drawn as in 1905. The model is perfect for powering with 545 type motors, performance with R/C will be greatly improved with individual electronic speed controllers. Large scale warships look very good on the water and are a joy to build.

Also included is our unique CONSTRUCTION MANUAL, this informative illustrated guide gives step-by-step instructions on how to fit out a typical GRP hull and is full of a wealth of useful hints and tips, as well as a list of other suppliers and manufacturers. .

HMS WARSPITE.

Queen Elizabeth Class 15 inch gun Battleship.

One of a class of eight 35,000ton. battleships of the Queen Elizabeth class HMS Warspite entered service just in time to take part in the Battle of Jutland where she distinguished herself by having a steering failure at a crucial moment and circling out of control in front of the whole German fleet drawing all their fire although damaged she was not seriously hurt and after repairs saw service with the home fleet untill armistice. Always in commision between the wars she was extensively re-fitted in the 1930s having a modern style bridge fitted, her gun control updated and boilers and engines replaced, this made her an extreemly useful battleship, being relatively small yet heavily armed with a nippy turn of speed.

On the outbreak of WWII she was stationed at Scapa Flow in the Orkneys, her greatest moment being the second battle of Narvik during the Norwegian campaign, here she sailed up the fjord and sank several german heavy destroyers and merchant ships, a very bold move to take such a large vessel into a very confined waterway.

She saw service in the Meditteranean where she helped the Malta convoys and took part in the battle of Taranto, by the end of the war she mounted over 100 x 20mm. Oerlikons as her wide beam made her an ideal anti-aircraft platform, at one time even firing wooden 15 inch practice shells as Stuka dive bombers (very effective method of putting them off target) she was sent for breaking-up in the early fifties, however to the end she was defiant and had to be broken up where she ran aground off Hartland.

Our hull is truly magnificent, with moulded in plating, torpedo bulges, hawse pipes, bilge keels and propeller shaft outlets, she will make-up into a really beautiful model that will be a practical on the water model, although we have no drawings to go with the hull we feel that anyone interested in having a go will be knowledgeble enough to source their own drawings and details, a real must for the warship enthusiast

Royal Navy WWII Denny Steam Gunboat.

HMS GREY GOOSE was built in 1942 and was one of a series of seven Denny type steam gunboats, planned as miniature destroyers, their steel hulls with steam turbines were intended to give superior type of all weather motor torpedo and gunboats, however their vulnerability to small calibre gunfire (all those steam pipes!) and their poor acceleration proved embarrassing, the intended programme for more vessels was cut back, only the seven GREY boats were built of of a planned 60 boats, they did however prove very useful as high speed stripped down blockade runners going to Sweden to bring back loads of ball-bearings.

At one time commanded by Sir Peter Scot (painter & naturalist) GREY GOOSE achieved her greatest fame when after the war she was converted by Vospers to an experimental gas-turbine powered vessel.

Our large, accurately moulded hull and full size plans make for a really nicely detailed model, ideal for R/C with electric power, however if you are feeling adventurous why not try her with a steam plant, performance with her easily driven hull would be quite fast.

HMS WARSPITE

Scale: 125th scale
Hull: 60 inch
Beam: 10.25 inch
Draft:

Queen Elizabeth Class 15 inch gun Battleship.

One of a class of eight 35,000ton. battleships of the Queen Elizabeth class HMS Warspite entered service just in time to take part in the Battle of Jutland where she distinguished herself by having a steering failure at a crucial moment and circling out of control in front of the whole German fleet, drawing all their fire, although damaged she was not seriously hurt and after repairs saw service with the home fleet untill armistice.

Our hull is truly magnificent, with moulded in plating, torpedo bulges, hawse pipes, bilge keels and propeller shaft outlets, she will make-up into a really beautiful model that will be a practical on the water model, although we have no drawings to go with the hull we feel that anyone interested in having a go will be knowledgeble enough to source their own drawings and details, a real must for the warship enthusiast!

M.A. JAMES.

1900, 3 Masted Schooner

This beautiful model hull is of a typical turn of the century trading schooner, Built in Portmadoc, North Wales in 1900, the M.A. JAMES was completed as a three masted topsail schooner for work in the slate and general cargo trade. These Welsh built schooners were known as the Western Ocean yachts due to their graceful lines and good turn of speed. With a crew of 5 (sometimes the masters wife sailed too) these relatively small vessels would range far & wide, slate to Germany, salt to Newfounderland, cod from Newfounderland to the Mediterranean, sometimes at sea for up to 15weeks.

This really beautiful hull comes complete with the gunwhales, rubbing strips, bow and stern detail and mouldings, this hull is a must for the scale sailor looking for a practical and attractive model. Plans are drawn fullsize and supplied by DAVID MacGREGOR, this model is eminently suitable for R/C, the hull could also be rigged as a Brig, Ketch or auxiliary Ketch.

Single Screw Multi-Role Fishing Vessel.

Our hull features port hole, stem anchor hawse pipe, full waterline, panama ports, wash ports and rubbing strip locations all moulded in, with a wide beam and fitted with R/C. and single 545 motor the model will be both stable and capable of heavy weather use. An interesting and colourful model can be made using the highly detailled plans supplied by JIM POTTINGER to his usual high standard. 1950s Motor Cargo Vessel.

The motor vessel PATEKE was built by Scheepswerf Hoogezand N.V. of Holland in the 1950s for Richardson & Co Ltd of Napier, New Zealand. A typical dutch design of the period, PATEKA has a deadweight of 1,150tons. Her six cylinder 1,120bhp.Polar engine gave her a speed of 12knots and she was capable of carrying 80,000cu.ft. of grain. Cargo handling gear consists of nine derricks all operated by electric winches. PATEKA is altogether a trim and atractive little vessel representative of her period.

Our hull is well moulded and features the side rubbing strakes, port holes, panama ports, anchor hawse pipes, wash ports and waterline all moulded in, this detailled hull has plenty of room for electric or steam power plant all with R/C. control. Access into the hull is excellent via the forward hatches and large removable rear superstructure. The full-size plans by Nexus are excellent and allow for a nicely detailled model to be built, being such a pretty boat she makes for an excellent model that looks really good on the water and is quite capable of taking heavy weather, construction is straight forward and ideal for either the first time modeller or experienced builder.

Powered by two British Polar diesels with a combined power output of 4,620bhp. through a variable pitch propeller giving a speed of 15knots. Her 15 stainless steel tanks held a total of 1,850,000 pints. she continued to sail from Guinesss Dublin brewery to Runcorn until April1993 when last orders were called on this method of transporting beer, she was brocken up at F.Evans & Sons, Garston in November 1993.

Stern Trawler "NORINA".

Model Scale = 1:50.The 130ft. long NODINA and her sister ship the IDENA were built in 1975 on Humberside as middle distance stern trawlers, they were designed to also have the ability to work together at pair fishing.Typical of the design of trawlers of their day they feature a forward wheelhouse with all controls to the seven winches inside at the back of the wheelhouse. The NODINA makes an attractive and different model with its white superstructure, redoxide/green decks and orange hull.

Model Length : 31.1/2". (800mm.)

Model Beam : 7.1/2". (190mm.)

An interesting feature is the ramp at the stern, this is covered by the back gantry, this ramp is for hauling the nets up onto the main fish deck. The fish were then emptied in to the lower deck where they were filleted and transferred to the cold stores, she was a successful trawler finally being withdrawn from service in 1999 after her engine failed.

HULL & MATERIALS PACKAGE.

This is another new type of package for the modeller and features the following:

Well moulded and accurate GRP hull, finished in white.

Cast white metal rudder and bottom rudder skeg.

A materials pack of white matt/matt H.I.P.S. (high impact polystyrene sheet) in 1.5mm, 1mm & 0.75mm, all sheets are a nominal size of 660mm x 274mm. All this material is easily glued with ordinary styrene adhesive.

6mm x 3mm x 660mm strip styrene for fixing the deck to the GRP hull and for corner reinforcement.

Large single sheet General arrangement drawing by David Metcalf, drawn full-size, this also shows details of the main winches and colour scheme, this drawing has been prepared from the original builders drawings.

Our own unique Construction Booklet (this is full of useful hints and tips and illustrations on how to put together and finish one of our GRP Hull packages) this helps make the construction of the model fairly straightforward.

The above package allows for a nicely detailed model to be made, at 1:50 scale many commercial fittings are readily available, fitted with a single 545 motor her performance on the water is excellent, making her ideal for regatta work or just cruising the lake. Although more suited to a modeller with some previous experience she can be tackled by a beginner.

Based on the THORINA from Hull, that worked off the coast of Iceland before the cold wars. She could easily just as well be completed as one of many fine trawlers of that period. Our hull is accurately moulded up to the main deck level and is a plain moulding supplied white GRP. Drawings are by A.D.Trollope and come from the Nexus plans service.  This hull makes up into and handsome vessel capable of taking on the heaviest of weather conditions, building the model at this scale means there are many fittings and other parts readily available.

P.S. TALISMAN.

Diesel Powered Clyde Paddle Ship.

Our lovely detailled model hull of the TALISMAN brings all the grace and beauty of the Clyde paddler to the modelller, when built in 1935 the decision to build TALISMAN with diesel power was most unusual as steam was still in its heyday on the Clyde, but the advantages of economy of operation, ease of starting and refuelling and instant speed changes all helped to sway the owners (L.N.E.R.) minds. TALISMAN ran well from 1935 to 1939 when engine damage laid her up, she was repaired when WWII started and was requisitioned in 1940. TALISMAN then became the anti-aircraft ship HMS Aristocrat. D-Day saw her at Arromanches as H.Q. ship for the mulberry harbour there, here she was damaged by enemy gunfire. She was eventually sold for scrap in 1967 after a long and varied career.

Our hull has moulded in side windows and porthole positions, the anchor hawse pipe positions and sponson lines are also there and a full waterline. The model is perfect for electric power and the two sheet plans by Nexus show all detail as well as simplified and fully working paddle drawings, however with some modifications she will also take the Graupner plastic paddle sets, thus making her ideal for the first time builder.
